Offshore installations, mining and heavy workshops place the highest demands on both signs and labels. Done right, the marking lasts the full life of the equipment — done wrong, it becomes unreadable long before the inspection interval.
Start from the worst stressor
Define what is most critical in your environment first: salt air (offshore, ships), impact and abrasion from dust and grit (mining), heat and chemicals (process industry) or vibration (vehicles and rail)? Material choice must be driven by the single worst stressor.
Metal is usually the right answer
For permanent marking on heavy equipment, laser-engraved plates in anodised aluminium or stainless steel are the most reliable. The mark sits in the material and cannot be worn off or dissolved. Fasten with rivets, screws or a strong structural adhesive — not standard tape alone.
When labels are used in harsh environments
Labels can be used where a plate does not fit, but the material chain must be deliberate: polyester or specialty plastic as the face film, chemical-resistant adhesive, UV-stable overlaminate or PU coating as protection. Always test a sample on a real surface before series production.
