Marking for export — UL, CSA and international requirements
CE marking is not enough outside the EU. We cover what UL 969 means for labels in North America, how CSA works in Canada, and why language, units and symbols must be adapted per market — plus how material and print method decide whether the marking meets the requirements.
Selling machinery and equipment outside the EU nearly always means adapting the marking. The CE mark is an EU instrument and has no legal effect in North America, Asia or the rest of the world. Export markets run on other systems, often built around certification bodies and tested material combinations rather than the manufacturer's own declaration.
UL 969 — the standard for marking and labelling in North America
In the United States, UL is one of the most established certification bodies, and UL 969 is the standard covering marking and labelling specifically. The core idea of UL 969 is that a label is not assessed as an isolated product but as a combination: face material, print method and ink, adhesive, and the surface the label is applied to. A combination approved for one surface is not automatically approved for another.
Assessment rests on durability testing — how the marking withstands exposure, temperature, moisture and abrasion under the conditions of intended use — and on adhesion holding on the stated substrate. The outcome is expressed as approved material combinations with specified conditions of use, such as the temperature range and the surfaces covered.
In practice that means two things for you as the buyer. First, you need to know the substrate the marking will sit on and the environment it faces — that determines which combination can be used. Second, you cannot freely swap adhesive or film later without checking how it affects the approval.
CSA — the Canadian counterpart
In Canada, CSA Group is the dominant certification body and the CSA mark is what the market expects. Requirements sit close to US practice, and many products are certified for both markets at once. There are differences to track, though — not least language, since Canada is bilingual and information is often required in both English and French.
Plan for that in the layout from the start. Squeezing French text onto a plate designed for English alone almost always ends in type that is too small, poorer legibility and a marking that looks improvised.
Language, units and symbols differ
Alongside certification there are market-specific requirements that are easy to miss:
- Language — many markets require safety and warning text in the local language, sometimes in several.
- Units — imperial units are used alongside SI in North America; state both where relevant for pressure, weight or dimensions.
- Electrical data — voltage and frequency differ by region and must match the variant being shipped.
- Symbols and pictograms — warning symbol design and signal words follow different standards in different markets.
- Date formats and address details — importer or local representative details may be required.
Material and method decide whether requirements are met
Durability requirements make material choice the central question in export marking. An ordinary printed vinyl label rarely survives the test conditions applied to industrial equipment. Depending on the application, the answer is polyester or specialist films with a suitable adhesive, a protective laminate or PU coating over the print, or metal plates in anodised aluminium or stainless steel when the lifetime requirement is high.
Print method matters in the same way. Digital printing gives flexibility and variable data, screen printing lays down thick, high-opacity ink films, and laser engraving puts the mark into the material where it cannot be worn away. The requirements decide the method — not the other way round.
Why a supplier with material knowledge pays off
The most common reason an export marking fails is not wrong text but a material combination that does not match the requirements for the intended use.
