Machine nameplates and CE marking — what you need to know

What is a machine or nameplate?
A nameplate is the permanent marking that identifies a machine or technical system. It must be clearly visible, permanently fixed and readable throughout the product's life. Typical content is manufacturer name and address, machine type designation, serial number, year of manufacture and, where relevant, technical data such as power, voltage or weight.
The CE mark and what it means
The CE mark is the manufacturer's declaration that the product complies with applicable EU legislation. For machines the format and placement of the CE mark are governed by the Machinery Directive. It must normally be applied visibly, legibly and durably — in practice most often as part of the nameplate or on a separate plate next to it.
What to consider when designing the plate
- A material that lasts the full life of the machine (typically anodised aluminium or laser-engraved stainless).
- Fastening that cannot come loose from vibration or cleaning.
- Readability: character size and contrast that let the plate be read on site.
- Space for every piece of information the directive requires for that machine type — list them before laying out.
