Laser engraving or digital print — when to use which?
Two of our most common techniques — and two very different outcomes. Here we compare laser engraving and digital print on durability, colour reproduction, run length and cost, so you know which technique fits your application.
The question comes up in almost every project: should the text and graphics be lasered or printed? The answer depends on which property matters most — durability, colour, speed or cost.
Laser engraving — permanent marking in the material
Laser engraving removes or transforms a thin surface layer so that the mark sits in the material, not on top of it. The result is a mark that cannot be worn off or dissolved by chemicals. Laser engraving is ideal for nameplates, serial numbers and safety marking that must last the entire product life. The trade-off is that laser marks are essentially single-colour — contrast comes from the material underneath (e.g. black text on anodised aluminium).
Digital print — full colour and fast changeovers
Digital print does the opposite: full-colour print with photo and gradient reproduction, typically with UV-curable inks that adhere well to plastic and metal. Perfect when you need CMYK logos, colour-coded panels or short-to-medium runs with variable artwork. Protected by the right laminate, digital print has good outdoor life — but it sits as a layer on the material and wears faster than laser marks in harsh environments.
Run length and cost
Digital print has no plate or film setup cost, so it is cost-effective from a single unit upwards. Laser engraving has low setup cost but takes longer per plate — for very large runs, screen printing or stamping can be more rational.
How to choose
- Serial numbers, nameplates, CE marking that must last for decades: laser engraving.
- Colour-rich graphics, CMYK logo, image content: digital print.
- Prototypes or short runs with variable artwork: digital print.
- Extreme wear, chemicals or UV without maintenance access: laser engraving in metal.
The techniques are often combined — a laser-engraved base plate with a printed information label, or a printed panel with laser-cut translucent windows for backlighting. Describe the end use and we will propose the right combination.
