Front panels and overlays — differences and use cases
The word front panel is used differently in different industries. Here is how we see the difference between a rigid front panel and a thin overlay, and when each fits for user interfaces, control panels and machine HMIs.
Both front panels and overlays are the first thing a user meets on a machine or device — they carry graphics, symbols and often keys or a display. The difference lies in thickness, construction and function.
Front panels — rigid carrier with print and cut-outs
A front panel is a rigid sheet, often aluminium or plastic, that forms the outer enclosure of the device. It can have milled openings for switches, displays and connectors, be surface-treated for durability and printed with graphics. Front panels are the right choice when the panel must also carry mechanical components and stand direct handling.
Overlays — thin membrane covering the interface
An overlay is a thin film, typically polyester or polycarbonate, that is bonded on top of a rigid substrate. It is printed from the underside so the artwork sits protected. Overlays are used for membrane keypads, HMI panels and as wear protection for interfaces where the keys sit under the film.
How to choose
- Does the panel need to carry mechanical components (switches, display, connectors)? Front panel.
- Are the keys membrane-actuated and the interface must be sealed? Overlay.
- High wear and cleaning requirements? Polycarbonate with anti-glare surface, or PU coating.
- Backlighting through the panel? Choose material with the right light transmission and plan the print accordingly.
Combine for best results
